Today I started a new placement because my other one was becoming a little frustrating with them asking me for money everyday. I am now going to be volunteering in a nursery school for orphans. It is a muslum school and the children range from the age of 3 to 16.There are 3 different class rooms but I wiil be working with the younger ones, 3 to 5 year olds. There are 60 children in the classroom with 2 teachers and myself. They are the most adorable children. When I arrived they sang a song to greet me and recited there names to me. We worked on writing their numbers and letters. When I would sit with them to help them they would hold my hand and just smile. One little boy was just facinated with my watch and just wanted to push the buttons on it. After an hour of lessons we went outside to play football. The children in the oter classrooms were all outside also and they were all watching me kicking the ball around. We then all got in a circle and sang songs. Some of the older girls were teaching me hand clapping games, they all want your attention. It is such a great place for me to be. I know I will be very happy there for the rest of the time.
CCS home base has been great. The staff really cares about you, if you are happy and for your safety.Everyone in the house is going on Safari this weekend. We leave Friday after our placement and return on Sunday evening. This is going to so exciting. I can t wait!
Thanks to everyone following. I have recieved your e mails just dont have enough time to get back to everyone. Can t wait to tell you about the Safari.

  1. Karin ~ Wow, this sounds soooo incredible! As you know we were recently in Southern Africa for two weeks and the experiences we had were incredible as tourists, how wonderful to be there as a volunteer doing your meaningful work. The poverty is really humbling and the amount of orphans is just incredibly sad. We had some great conversations with men in Zambia who told us that some men are finally talking about the HIV issue and wearing condoms, but they are a long way away!

On a lighter note, where are you going on safari? We LOVED Chobe National Park in Botswana and saw every animal imaginable except rhinos. We were amazed at how close we got to the animals (including a lion!) and the grace and beauty of all that we saw. I can't wait to hear all about your safari experience!

What you are doing is so special and I'm sure those little ones adore you and all that you are providing! Love your blog! Peace out ~ Susan

  7. Hi Karen,
I know that you've found your niche now. The need is obviously there and your love of children and wonderful relationship with them will shine through in your daily contact with all these little ones. I can't believe the student/teacher ratio---but at the same time I'm not surprised. You'll be soooo helpful!

The best is that you will get right outside and play the games with them! I can just see you kicking the ball around, playing hopscotch or jump rope (African style), or whatever other game the kids like to play. What a great role model you are.

We're also very glad to hear how helpful, caring and protective your house staff is. Makes us all feel so much better.

Enjoy the safari--we can't wait to hear all about it and see the pictures when you get home.
Stay safe and know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

    Love, Judy and Bill
